Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is a Live Action series of the manga Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. It is normally referred to as 'PGSM', and was created by the company Toei. In total, the series had 49 episodes that originally aired every weekend on the Japanese CBC/TBS network from October 2003 to September 2004. After all 49 episodes had been aired, a Special Act and an Act Zero came out. The live action series also had a radio program series, CD albums, DVDs, printed publications, toys, stationary, and numerous other publications that came out. The creator of the series Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon had also been involved with the production of the series, and was part of casting the roles and many other tasks such as creating the designs for new characters. The series overall stays more true to the manga than the anime, but about halfway it begins to spin off in its own direction and focuses on other themes that the manga did not explore.

PGSM vs. the Manga: (SPOILDERS!!!)

  • The story is closer to the manga than the anime; after episode 27 it starts spinning off in its own direction. It also focuses more on their civilian lives, and some aspects of the story was adapted to current technology.
  • Mamoru has a fiancé: Hina-chan.
  • Mamoru goes to study abroad in London; The father of his fiancé is his patron.
  • Sailor Mercury becomes Dark Sailor Mercury, changed by Kunzite.
  • The generals all have different motives for their actions; such as recognition, etc.
  • Zoisite plays the piano; was also able to force people to remember their past life.
  • Kunzite begins the series as Shin; but once he regains the memories of his past life, he becomes Kunzite.
  • Luna transforms into Sailor Luna with the silver crystal; when she sneezes she returns to her cat form .
  • Motoki has a crush on Makoto.
  • Instead of pens, the senshi transform using magical watches, which they also use to communicate.
  • Instead of having a secret arcade, the senshi meet at a magical karaoke room.
  • Minako pushes Rei to become her replacement, and develop a special relationship.
  • Minako is a famous pop idol and leads a double life as Sailor V; She also has a tumor.
  • It is revealed that Princess Serenity destroyed the Silver Millennium; so the characters try to keep them apart to prevent the past from repeating.
  • Mio Kuroki, an antagonists in Usagi’s civilian and warrior life, is part of Queen Beryl. She is also Minako’s pop rival.
