When Hotaru is first introduced, she is a girl who is more fragile than glass. She is prone to have fits of pain and she was ostracized by the children who attended her school. And when she was very young, she had died when a fire broke out in the Mugen area, which also resulted in the death of Hotaru's mother, Tomoe Keiko, and the injury of her father, Tomoe Souichi. Her father revived Hotaru, but it was done at Hotaru's expense. She was turned into a cyborg and used as a vessel for Mistress 9. After she meets ChibiUsa, her heart starts to become softer. Unfortunately, her fits get worse. Tomoe Suichi gives her the Tioron Crystal, an amulet that used to belong to her mother. She is eventually overcome by Mistress 9, who then steals ChibiUsa's Silver Crystal; but Hotaru fights back. She keeps the crystal safe, and gives it back to ChibiUsa and reawakens as Sailor Saturn. When she is reborn, she is raised by Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna and she grows at an exponential rate. Although her life is happy and joyous, "sometimes her eyes turn cold like the rings of saturn". Hotaru is a very sensitive and intelligent girl. And she would do anything for her best friend, ChibiUsa.

The Soldier: Sailor Saturn; Super; Eternal
When the three sacred talismans are brought together, it is said to bring ruin and destruction. The three ancient treasures call upon the awakening of the soldier of silence, Sailor Saturn. When she is awakened for the first time, she wears an intricate fuku, with a sailor crystal in the middle of her front ribbon instead of a jewel. However, Pluto notes that there is a distortion in time, and that Saturn was not meant to awaken yet. When Saturn confronts Pharoh 90, she drains him of his energy and drops the Silence Glaive. She thend leads the evil entity back to its own galaxy and had the doorway sealed off. To everyone's surprise, Hotaru was then reincarnated as a baby, and was raised by the other Outer Senshi. After her rebirth, she was reawakened, and allowed her to lead the other senshi towards their true awakening. No longer feared as a dreaded soldier of silence, she battles with the other senshi and fights to protect their princess. In the future, it is thought that she will become a co-leader of the Sailor Quartet with Sailor ChibiMoon.

The Past: Princess Saturn
A thousand years ago during the Silver Millennium, Princess Saturn had been chosen to be the guardian of her home planet, Saturn. When she was born, she was given the castle Titan by Queen Serenity. Unfortunately, not much is known about the Princess during this time period; however, it has been stated that she was treated like an "unwanted guest". When the time came for her to be awakened as a sailor senshi, it was told that she would bring ruin and destruction to the world. When one disaster after another befell the Moon Kingdom and Queen Serenity had sealed Metallia, Princess Saturn as Sailor Saturn was the one who dropped the silence glaive. Alone, she had provided the power to allow the Earth to reconstruct itself. Unfortunately, it was too late for the Moon Kingdom. But with the powers of the Ginzuishou, Queen Serenity brought the planetary princess back to life.
